Happy Wednesday everyone. So why do I randomly make ridiculous faces at myself in the mirror, and why do I suggest that you do the same? Am I losing it? I mean, probably. But there is a method to my madness.

Referring to it as my madness isn’t really accurate, though. This is actually something I picked up reading Tony Robbins’ book Awaken the Giant Within. He’s the crazy one here! Making a weird-ass face at yourself in the midst of anger or gloom is what’s called a pattern interrupt. It’s called that because making those funny faces is a great way to interrupt those feelings of doom and gloom, thus preventing them from snowballing into something bigger. Before you know it, you’ll forget what the hell it was you were so upset about in the first place.

Let’s say you’re angry and one angry thought leads to another, so on and so forth, and before you know it you can feel your heartbeat in your head. Rather than thinking Yeah, I’ve got an anger problem, you can take a more active approach and stop those thoughts in their tracks. Nip ’em in the bud, as they say.

When you feel overwhelmed, angry, sad, or basically any way you don’t want to go down the rabbit hole of feeling, make a weird face at yourself in the mirror. Grin in an over-the-top way. Flare your…
